Missouri State Build 2009

Springfield Build: a community event where a campus affiliate completes a house in a short amount of time. The purposes for these events are to create a sense of community, attract volunteers, and to promote the ideals of the Habitat mission.

Our Plan: A Green Build!

Green building. Sustainable building. Energy-efficient building. Whatever you call it, the need to create environmentally conscious houses is growing. According to the Global Footprint Network, humanity's overall ecological impact is 23 percent larger than what the planet can generate. A house built with sustainability in mind not only lessens the detrimental impacts of development on the earth – it also improves our health and reduces costs and energy use.

More and more Habitat affiliates are building “greener” houses that help create sustainable communities and allow homeowners to save money with less energy use. In fact, one of the principles listed in Habitat for Humanity International's mission statement calls Habitat to “promote transformational and sustainable community development.”

Missouri State's Habitat Chapter is currently designing and planning efforts to build a sustainable house in the Spring '09!

Here are some new updates and information:

*We are starting demolition on the house Friday, Feb. 6 from 2 p.m.-6 p.m. (one shift) and on Saturday, Feb. 7 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. (two shifts: 8-2 and 12-4).

*We will be asking people to car pool from campus because it is a residential street, and we do not want a whole bunch of cars causing congestion and parking issues.

*We are required by Habitat to have someone who is knowledgeable in residential construction manage this because their project managers are unavailable. Thanks to Jeff Souza for agreeing to be the one in charge at the site!

*Some details of the project have changed during the preparation process: For example, we are no longer doing a LEED house. Instead, it will be an energy star house.  Instead of doing a blitz build, it will be a regular build that will be about eight weeks long, ending the week of April 16th where we can do an open house/dedication event, possibly tying it into the Public Affairs Conference.

What we need from you!
*Raising money should be the number one priority, if not the only priority at this point. We only have about six weeks until we need to start building and in order to start building, the foundation will have to be done before that. Any suggestions on raising money/help contacting possible sponsors would be greatly appreciated!
