NICK EVANGELISTA

  Society's Teacher (Maestro)

He got started in fencing the same way many people do. ".I watched old swashbuckler films, liked them a lot; and then, one day, I couldn't   stand not fencing anymore, so I found a school   in the area where  I lived, and just started taking   lessons. I was not a natural fencer; I had to   work hard at it. But   once I got started I never stopped. That was thirty-five years ago.".

He learned to fence at Falcon Studios, which was an old-time fencing school. His teacher, Ralph Faulkner, was a former Olympian who fenced in the 1928 and 1932 Olympic Games. Falcon had a long tradition of excellence, and had produced many champions. "It was the perfect place

Teaching to studentsto learn to fence. Falcon was also a theatrical school, so I was also steeped in the theatrical side of fencing. Mr. Faulkner had worked in many of the great swashbuckler films of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s -- films like Captain Blood, The Prisoner of Zenda, The Sea Hawk, and The Court Jester.".

Nick Evangelista's teacher,
Ralph Faulkner, was known from his involvement in the movies, as "The Fencing Master to the Stars." During Hollywood's "Golden Age," he coached such swashbuckling luminaries as Errol Flynn, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and Ronald Colman.

Mr. Evangelista has many published articles to his credit. Moreover, he has four books: "The Encyclopedia of the Sword" ( Greenwood Press; 1995), "The Art and Science of Fencing" ( Masters Press ; 1996), "Fighting with Sticks" (Loompanics Press; 1998), and "The Inner Game of Fencing" (Masters Press; 2000). His work has also been quoted in Smithsonian Magazine.
