About

What is Specturm?

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Ally Alliance (Spectrum) is a non-profit student organization dedicated to three purposes. First, Spectrum provides a social environment for its members. Second, Spectrum seeks to educate the community about LGBTQ issues. Finally, Spectrum provides support for people just realizing their orientations and coming out of the closet.

Who is Spectrum?

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Ally Alliance is a group of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, straight, unidentified students and their allies on the Missouri State campus and in the community who meet once a week for a formal meeting and attend various planned activities and events that celebrate, address and concern the LGBTQ community, not only in our immediate area, but nationally.

Can anyone join?

Of course! We love diversity! Spectrum membership is open to all students, faculty and staff of Missouri State, their families and friends, as well as members of the community who are like-wise concerned with the sexual minority population.

When does Spectrum meet?

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Ally Alliance meets every Wednesday at 7:00pm in the Plaster Student Union Room 314, unless otherwise noted. Look for the rainbow flag!

When did Spectrum begin as a group on the Missouri State campus?

Spectrum is the proud descendant of of a student organization founded at Missouri State in the early 1980s called GALSA, the Gay and Lesbian Student Association. In the Spring of 1997 a vote was taken to officially change the name of the organization to BiGALA, to better reflect the membership of the organization, which had become increasingly self-identified as bisexual. In the Spring of 2011, a vote was taken to officially change the name of the organization to Spectrum, to better reflect the broad spectrum of the membership of the organization.

Spectrum's Mission

To provide community for sexual minorities and their friends and supporters, and to take actions to improve the lives and welfare of the members and persons in the surrounding community through greater positive visibility of non-heterosexual people, by challenging and combating negative, libelous and incorrect depictions of non-heterosexual people, by defending the honor and value of non-heterosexual individuals, and by working with other like-minded organizations to raise the level of public understanding and acceptance of non-heterosexual persons, and the great social roles they have played and continue to play.
